It’s important to take care of your bedding for a restful night’s sleep. To ensure your bedroom remains a haven of relaxation, it’s important to regularly wash your mattress, duvet and pillows. Read on for Carré Blanc’s top tips on keeping your bedding and bed linen clean.

Washing your duvet

Your duvet should be washed at least once per year to protect it from mites and bacteria. Always check the label before washing, as the correct temperature will depend on the fabric and filling of yoru duvet. Duvets made from natural fibres can be washed at 60°C, while synthetic duvets should be washed at 40°C. Always wash your duvet on its own. For maximum bounciness, throw a tennis ball into the drum of the washing machine - this will improve air distribution when washing and drying for a cleaner result.

Day-to-day, remember to air your bedroom for at least half an hour on a daily basis. Wherever possible, try to air your duvet outside or by a window to ensure it dries after a night in contact with the skin. Natural sunlight is an excellent antibacterial agent, so don’t hesitate to leave your duvet to dry in the sun to remove odors and humidity. The same goes for drying your duvet - if you have the space, outside in the garden or yard is best.

Washing your pillow

Whether your pillow is made from natural fibres or synthetic material, make sure to wash it every three months. Just like your duvet, your pillow can be home to bacteria, mites and trapped humidity, as well as oil and sebum from our hair and skin. Wash your pillow on a medium temperature, between 40°C and 60°C depending on the manufacturer’s label. The tennis ball trick is also a great way to restore bounce to your pillow when washing or drying it - just throw a ball or two in the drum.

To keep your pillow clean for as long as possible, use a pillow cover or pillow protector. This wilk act as a barrier against perspiration, oil and makeup residue. Discover Carré Blanc’s range of pillow protectors, effective against humidity, bacteria and allergens, to keep your pillows like new!

Cleaning your mattress

To keep your mattress fresh, firm and clean, air it regularly by turning it on its side. Vacuum your mattress regularly to remove any hair or dust. If possible, air your mattress outdoors in the open sunlight - a surefire way to kill off any dust mites or bacteria! Mattress protectors are also ideal to keep your mattress from becoming stained or worn. Mattress toppers can be washed at 60°C.

For those pesky marks that just won’t disappear, avoid using water directly onto the surface of the mattress: instead, dip a cloth in household vinegar or washing-up liquid and gently dab the stain. For older bedding that may be home to bacteria, mites or mould, it’s essential to invest in the right protection. Finally, you should change your mattress every 10 years.
